Workshop Description

Join me on April 4, 2027, at 5PM PT/6PM MT/7PM CT/8PM ET for the April Slavic Sunday Workshop: Motanky: Slavic Spirit Dolls. In this immersive Zoom workshop, we’ll explore motanky, traditional Ukrainian knotted dolls created without needles and imbued with intention. Discover how these faceless figures carry blessings, protection, ancestral memory, and the hopes of the maker through cloth, thread, color, and sacred gesture. Can’t make it live? A recording will be sent to all who register.

This workshop is part of the 2027 Slavic Sundays Witchcraft Workshop Series, Slavic Roots: A Year of Magic and Myth. This series is a masterclass in Slavic folklore, folk magic, and spirit traditions. Make sure to subscribe so you never miss a workshop (and save 25%, or even more by pre-paying for the full year!).

More Info:

Motanky are spirit dolls made by winding, wrapping, and knotting rather than cutting a face or sewing the figure into being. Their construction reflects ideas about fate, continuity, protection, and the power of focus in creating a magical artifact. We’ll study their symbolism, traditional forms, and the meaningful choices involved in making a doll for the home, family, or a specific intention.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Origins and Traditions: Learn the history and cultural significance of motanky in Ukrainian households and folk practice.
  • Why the Doll Is Faceless: Explore the spiritual meaning of anonymity, protection, and the absence of an individual expression.
  • Knots, Wrapping, and Fate: Understand how construction methods transform simple cloth and thread into a vessel of intention.
  • Colors and Materials: Choose fabrics, fibers, grains, herbs, and colors that support the doll’s purpose.
  • Types of Motanky: Discover dolls associated with protection, fertility, prosperity, family harmony, and important life transitions.
  • Blessing and Keeping the Doll: Learn ways to dedicate, place, tend, and respectfully use a motanka in your spiritual practice.

Whether you wish to create a household guardian or better understand a beloved Ukrainian folk tradition, this workshop will reveal the layered magic woven into every knot and fold.

What's Included:

  • Access to the live Zoom workshop with Madame Pamita on April 4th, 2027.
