More Info:

Traditional Slavic harvest celebrations did not consist of a single holiday. They unfolded through a cycle of agricultural work, seasonal festivals, magical rites, communal processions, and celebratory feasts.

In this workshop, you’ll explore summer and autumn haymaking, the Feast of Ilya the Thunderer, the flower and garden celebration of Makovi, the completion-of-the-harvest rituals of Objinki, and the final Spas Festival of grain, fruit, and honey. You’ll also learn how ancient animistic and pagan beliefs survived through Christianization, cultural suppression, and modernization.

What You’ll Learn:

For our ancestors, the success of the harvest determined whether the community would survive the winter and reach the next growing season. Harvesting was therefore much more than physical labor—it was a sacred collaboration between people, the earth, the elements, the ancestors, and the spirits of the land.

In this workshop, you’ll explore:

  • Slavic Harvest Festivals: Discover how the traditional harvest season unfolded through several stages, from summer haymaking and early harvest celebrations to the completion of the agricultural year.
  • Ancient Origins of Harvest Magic: Trace the layers of Slavic harvest traditions from early animistic reverence for the sun, sky, earth, plants, and natural forces through pagan religion, Christianization, Soviet suppression, and modern cultural revival.
  • Gods of the Harvest: Explore the deities and divine powers associated with fertility, weather, livestock, wealth, and successful crops, including Hors, Perun, and Veles—and learn how pagan gods were later associated with Christian saints such as Ilya and Saint Vlas.
  • Summer and Autumn Haymaking: Learn about the magical customs surrounding the cutting and gathering of hay, including departure processions, ritual songs, blessings, incantations, communal labor, and prayers for favorable weather and healthy livestock.
  • The Feast of Ilya the Thunderer: Discover the folklore surrounding Ilya, the Christian successor to the thunder god Perun, and explore his role as a protector of fields, harvested grain, haystacks, and the community during the storm-filled transition from summer into autumn.
  • Makovi: Explore the ancient festival of poppies, flowers, gardens, vegetables, children, and ancestors. Learn how families prepared magical bouquets and wreaths, selected poppy heads, spoke blessings over individual plants, and preserved the consecrated herbs for healing and household magic.
  • The Magic of Poppies and Flowers: Discover the connection between flowers, unborn children, the souls of the ancestors, fertility, love, beauty, marriage, childbirth, protection, healing, and the changing seasons.
  • Objinki: Learn about the rituals performed when the harvest came to an end, including reaping songs, conversations with the field, harvest wreaths, the final sheaf, the harvest procession, and the communal feast honoring the reapers.
  • Tying the Beard: Explore the custom of leaving a small portion of grain standing in the field as a refuge and offering for land spirits, ancestors, animals, and the divine forces responsible for the harvest.
  • The Didukh and Harvest Wreath: Discover how the final sheaf and ceremonial wreath embodied the spirits of the harvest and the ancestors and how they were carried home through a joyful ritual procession.
  • Harvest Magic and Divination: Learn how songs, incantations, ritual games, sickles, wreaths, grain, bread, salt, and other sacred objects were used to bless the land, divine the coming year, and call in another plentiful harvest.
  • The Spas Festival: Explore the final harvest celebration—originally a festival of grain, fruit, and honey—including offerings of gratitude, blessings of the harvest, ritual foods, and the transformation of older pagan customs after Christianization.

This workshop is perfect for anyone fascinated by Slavic folklore, Ukrainian culture, pagan spirituality, agricultural magic, plant traditions, ancestor veneration, or the sacred cycles of the land. You’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the rituals that helped communities express gratitude, preserve abundance, and remain connected to the natural and spiritual worlds.
